چکیده

Team matches for two-person games / sports, e.g. chess are considered. In a competition between two teams A and B each player of team A has to play against exactly one player of team B. To arrange this assignment each team chooses a line-up. For the line-up the playing strength is the most common criterion. The best player of A should be the rst and so on. Assuming that team A has lined up its players according to their strengths, which line-up should team B opt for? We characterize all potentially optimal line-ups for such a team match. It turns out that there are F2n such line-ups for n players, where (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, . . . ) = (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, . . . ) are the Fibonacci numbers.

A constraint programming approach to the multiple-venue, sport-scheduling problem

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling sports competitions over several venues which are not associatedwith any of the competitors.A two-phase, constraint programming approach is developed, first identifying a solution that designates the participants and schedules each of the competitions, then assigning each competitor as the “home” or the “away” team. Computational experiments ...

Testing Soccer League Competition Algorithm in Comparison with Ten Popular Meta-heuristic Algorithms for Sizing Optimization of Truss Structures

Recently, many meta-heuristic algorithms are proposed for optimization of various problems. Some of them originally are presented for continuous optimization problems and some others are just applicable for discrete ones. In the literature, sizing optimization of truss structures is one of the discrete optimization problems which is solved by many meta-heuristic algorithms. In this paper, in or...

Reducing Government Spending with Privatization Competitions: a Study of the Department of Defense Experience

In a privatization competition, private contractors bid against an in-house team to perform a governmental function that is currently performed by the in-house team. The Department of Defense initiated 3,500 privatization competitions from 1978 to 1994, generating estimated annual savings of $1.46 billion. We estimate a reduced-form model of the savings from these competitions that takes into a...
